New page

Noor bids Charlie and Thandi goodnight and Thandi waves to her. Thandi then turns to her door and awkwardly paws for the handle before finally catching it and opening the door. She giggles and smiles back at Charlie. “Thanks for walking me. You’re such a gentleman!”

“Um. I beg to differ. In any case. Let's get you to bed.” He shoos her inside despite the bafflement on her face, closing the door behind them both. “Sit down. I'll help with your sandals.”

“H-Huh??” Her brows rise and her eyes widen. “Oh, n… no thanks! I—! I can do that! Um!” She takes a step back and stumbles.
“You're already stumbling. I'm worried. You said you've never been drunk before. What if you start throwing up and choke?” He kneels on the floor at the side of the bed. “I've got it. Okay?”

“N… No. It’s. It’s fine. Really. I’m fine. I’ve…” She looks about the room and sits at her desk. “I’ve never been drunk but. But I’ve. I’ve been… ahh.” She bends over to untie her sandals uselessly. Charlie is there in a breath, undoing the buckles easily.
“Out of sorts?” He doesn't even glance up as he eases the sandal down and off. “Listen. I'll leave if you want. I just. Am worried. Comparatively, you seem to be struggling the most. If I could do more to help, I would, but. Alas.”

“It’s… am I really?” She pouts and her arms come up to wrap around herself. She rubs her arms like she’s chilled. “What makes you think so?”

“Well, you said you've never been drunk, and you stumbled quite a lot on the way back here. And seeing as you can't hold your drink— or at least ''that'' drink— I feel justified in worrying.”

“Oh…” She chuckles. “I thought…” She takes a breath. “Did you have fun tonight?”

“I did. I wasn’t expecting to, but I did.” Charlie finds himself smiling as he undoes her other sandal. “What did you think I meant? I know you ''are'' struggling. You always seem a bit… well. You're trying so hard. In a lot of things.”

“Yeah… that’s what I thought you meant.” She laughs. “It’s hard. It’s all so hard.” She sets her chin on her hand and rests her elbow on her leg. “Why did you become a doctor?”

At that, Charlie pauses, halfway slipping her sandal off. “Well…” He purses his lips. “Mmmn. Mm.” He finally looks up at her. “Well, um. It… seemed to be what I was the whole time. If that makes sense. I started early and then, there I was.”

She blinks and tilts her head. “Interesting.” Her eyes are unfocused at first but when she squeezes her eyes shut and opens them again, she seems a bit more focused. Her eyes… hm. There’s something to them. They’re dark, yes, but they almost have a twinkle to them. “You really had fun?” She smiles again. “It ''was'' fun, wasn’t it? What part did you like best about today?”

“About the whole day?” When she nods he turns his gaze back to his task, removing her sandal and neatly placing it at her bedside. “Probably eating… what was that street food? And it was such a beautiful day. Really nice. Ah…”

She nods, smiling wider. “I liked that too.” She giggles. “I’ve never done any of it before. Most of it, anyway.” She breathes deeply and sits up straight. “I’ve definitely never done ''this'' before.” She rubs her arms again. “Why are you d… I mean. You’re worried but… why? Why are you worried to the point of taking care of me?”

“Like I said earlier… you could die in your sleep if you vomit in the night. Or. What if you need help when you rise for the restroom. Or…” He pauses. “You mean care about you, personally, the person?”

She nods. Then her smile falters and she glances away. “Unless. This is just. Just so I don’t die.”

“Well, as a doctor, that's my motivation for maybe. Ninety percent? Of everything I do. But. Um…” He sits cross-legged on the floor, rubbing his neck and worrying a bit. “Um. It's embarrassing. But. You're, um. Quite. Good. Actually. A nice person. Very brave.”

Her brows rise and the flush of her cheeks deepens. “Oh. Me? No, I…” She laughs nervously and leans back. “''No''. I’m.” She scoffs then covers her face and shakes her head. When she lowers her hands, she’s smiling bashfully. “It was pretty brave to stand up to the council. But only because I needed to! For all of your sakes! You’d worked so hard only to be… dismissed. And. So easily too. It wasn’t fair. You all deserve better than that.”

“If everyone feels the same as me in that regard, we're all grateful to you doing so. Being stuck in a fishbowl and living under that strange… pressure. I think it would drive us mad sooner rather than later. But we didn't have the authority. But you managed to hop up and stand up to them and, ah. The onion… Valala. Valele. Valerian…”

“''Valeria''. You’re a doctor, you know what… you said it. Valerian root. You know what that is. Just use that!” She giggles and playfully pats his shoulder. She gasps. “Sorry. You. You don’t like that.” She grabs her offending hand with the other and pulls it back as if it were some rabid dog that got off its leash. “I’m sorry,” she murmurs.

“It’s okay. I was prepared, and I've been off and on touching you all night anyway. Now let's get you to bed, alright?” He pushes himself up off the floor and offers his hands to her.

She stares at them a moment before carefully setting her hands in his. He tugs her up and she squeaks like a little mouse! Her eyes are wide as she stares up at him and her lips part slightly. She closes her mouth and quickly looks away, clearing her throat. “Um. I. I need… my teeth. I need to brush. And tie up my hair. Um. Y… You really don’t have t…” She pulls her hands away and as she crosses the room to her dresser, she doesn’t stumble but she definitely ''wobbles''.

“I will, anyway. And I don't mind. I'm not great at sleeping, so I'll just… keep an eye on you. It's not a big deal. I've sat at a lot of bedsides overnight.”

“Oh, that’s…” She laughs a little as she opens a drawer and pulls out a silk scarf. She straightens and removes her headdress, depositing it on the dresser. Then she ties her hair up in the scarf to keep it safe while she sleeps. She tucks away any strays and he notices her leaning a bit too far to the left. He moves behind her, hand out to catch her just in case as he straightens her with the other.

“Here, I'll help with the jewelry. You've got quite a lot… amazing how you can remember them all.”

“Well, they all do different things. And I’ve got a list.” She tugs her bag off her and slips off her rings, dropping each one inside without care. Save for one she keeps on. She takes the necklace he helps remove, and the headdress, to drop in the bag. A few other pieces join the others and soon she’s down to just her gown. She pulls out her toothbrush and toothpaste, heading for the door. As he opens it for her, she asks, “Do you like taking care of people?”

“I guess it just feels natural to do. It’s not really… a like or dislike. But if I didn't… what point would there be to me?”
“What point would there be…?” She stumbles a bit to the tiny washroom with just a toilet and sink but sets to brushing her teeth. Charlie quickly goes to his own room as she leans against the sink to grab his own, returning to find her missing. He sighs and brushes his teeth, wondering if he's going overboard.

Then he remembers her falling and stumbling all over the obstacle course, wobbling about like gelatin on the way back to the Center, her drunken overtures at dinner.

Just this one time. If she’s fine tonight, she won't need help again. He brings his toothbrush back to his room and returns to her door, knocking lightly. “Thandi?”

“I’m alright,” she calls. “I mean it. I’m just in bed.” For another moment, he hesitates. Is this too much? “You can come in,” she says quietly. And even more quietly, she adds, “If you’re still there…”

He opens the door and quickly, quietly, shuts it behind him. She has dimmed her lamp quite a lot. He takes the chair and sits it by the bed. “Sorry. For a moment… I wondered if I was going overboard. Just worrying too much about you.” He doesn't really know ''why'' he cares. But. Without Thandi, what would happen to them all…?

“It’s okay. It… ''may'' be overboard. I don’t know. I don’t remember the last time someone fussed over me so much.” She chuckles. “You don’t have to stay all night, Charlie. I’m feeling a bit better. Honestly. I think the food and the walk and the time has helped clear my head a good bit.” She rubs her temple. “At least enough for me to be embarrassed.”

“Maybe ''I'' should be embarrassed for pushing you along. Alright. Once you're asleep, I'll go to my own room. Okay?” He settles in the chair. It creaks a bit as he adjusts. “It probably had worn off but… well. Allow me my worries?”

She shrugs, her smile more warm now. “I don’t mind. I’ve been having fun. I like learning more about you.” She rubs her arm and that’s when he realizes she’s changed her clothes. Her usually flimsy straps are now a thick lace. Her neckline is still deep but in a much smoother line than her usual dress.

Welp. He drags his eyes to her face and then to the lamp as he extinguishes the light. “Good. Now. Good night, Thandi.”
“Oh. Ahh. G… Good night, Charlie.” She rustles and shifts until finally falling silent.
